The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 6.1 quake in Japan near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan, only 13 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Monday, May 9th, 2022, at 3:23 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Seismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.8. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Yonakuni (pop. 1,700) located 73 km from the epicenter, Hualien City (pop. 350,500) 91 km away, Yilan (pop. 94,200) 114 km away, and Keelung (pop. 397,500) 148 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
