Despite mass layoffs and resignations, the demand for tech talent has increased by 45% in the first half of 2022 in the United States, according to the latest Dice report. Recruitment of IT specialists by non-tech companies “offset the impact of hiring freezes and layoffs at tech-focused companies”. From agile methodology to JavaScript to Python, here are the top 10 IT skills most in demand by American companies in 2022, based on job posting volume.

No. 1: The agile methodology

The technology skill most sought after by American employers in the first half of 2022 is Agile methodology. This term designates a way of managing a project by dividing it into several phases. This involves constant communication and collaboration with everyone involved. Once the project is launched, the teams go through a process of planning, execution and evaluation, with a desire to improve at each stage.

Between the first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022, job postings requiring Agile methodology skills increased by 68%.

#2: SQL

Structured Query Language (SQL) ranks second in Dice’s study. SQL is used to communicate with a database. It is the standard programming language for relational database management systems. SQL can perform a variety of operations on system data, whether updating or retrieving data.

Between the first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022, job postings that include a need for SQL increased by 62%.

No. 3: Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting ranks as the third most in-demand computer skill right now. Computer troubleshooting experts identify the problem, piece together explanations, and then attempt to find a solution based on their findings and knowledge.

Between the first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022, helpdesk job openings increased by 48%.

Python is a programming language used to create software and websites, perform data analysis, and automate tasks for businesses. It has been popular for decades due to its ease of learning and use, as well as strong community support on the internet. Between the first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022, job postings requesting Python expertise increased by 78%.

No. 5: Software engineering

Between the first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022, software engineering job openings increased by 87% in the United States.

No. 6: Java

The demand for skilled technicians in Amazon Web Services solutions is high as more and more companies are moving to the cloud and AWS is the leader in this market, with a share of around 34%.

Between the first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022, job offers containing the term ‘Amazon Web Services’ in the skill box increased by 88%.

No. 8: Automation

Companies are no exception when it comes to increasing profit. Here, it’s about hiring people to ultimately reduce human intervention in production to a minimum. Between the first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022, job openings in automation increased by 65%.

No. 9: Application development

Software development includes the creation, design, deployment, and support processes. Application development professionals have long been sought after by IT and non-tech companies. They create software using one or more specific programming languages. Between the first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022, software development job openings in the United States increased by 73%.

Between the first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022, the volume of job postings requiring JavaScript proficiency increased by 62%.

Methodology

To establish this semi-annual study, Dice explains that it screened 3 million IT job offers in the United States between January and June 2022.
